Ruth Handler and Barbie are the ultimate example of why a husband should listen to his wife, especially if he’s a founding partner of Mattel. Ruth tried in vain to convince her husband that children would use dolls to mimic grownups. After discovering a German doll that embodied her vision, Ruth convinced Mattel to launch Barbie in 1959 and Ken followed soon after.
